In 2014 when BMW Motorsport contested the first DTM season with the all new BMW M4 DTM, the new vehicle had to follow in the footsteps of a highly successful predecessor. When BMW made their DTM comeback, the BMW M3 DTM convinced right away. In 2012, the comeback season, the car helped the BMW drivers winning the drivers', team and manufacturers' titles. And in its second season, the M3 won the manufacturers' title once again. And the BMW M4 DTM tied in with these successes. In the car's debut season, Marco Wittmann won the drivers' championship early and BMW Team RMG secured the team title with an impressive lead.
In 2015, the BMW M4 DTM gave BMW another manufacturers' title and in 2016, Wittmann won his second drivers' championship. In 2017 the BMW M4 DTM that has been racing in DTM since 2014 was replaced by a new car bearing the same name.
Based on the new technical regulations, the car was significantly enhanced. In the off-season, the BMW M4 DTM was revised according to the specifications defined by the new regulations. The alterations were executed according to the credo: 'Less is More'. The downforce was reduced by about a third and as a result, the drivers' skills will be even more important than they used to be to date.
